L'histoire de Léo
Léo is a seven-and-a-half-year-old boy who lives in the north of Lyon, France. He has a younger brother who is six years younger, and he enjoys his role as a big brother. Léo is a sweet, endearing child who easily connects with others and is deeply appreciated by those around him.
Léo est un garçon de 7 ans et demi qui vit au nord de Lyon, en France. Il a un petit frère de 2 ans, et Léo apprécie son rôle de grand frère. C'est un enfant doux et attachant qui noue facilement des liens avec les autres et qui est très apprécié de son entourage.

History/Historique
From an early age, Léo showed significant developmental delays. At the age of 3 months, following major concerns about his development, he began a long and demanding medical journey. Léo underwent numerous medical examinations and assessments before a diagnosis was finally made. This period was marked by many questions, but also by a strong commitment from his family to ensure he received the best possible support.
Since then, Léo has been accompanied by a wide range of specialists, including physical therapists, psychomotor therapists, speech therapists, and orthoptists - almost every day of the week. He has also benefited from intensive therapy programs (15-day sessions) both in France and in Poland, which have played an important role in his progress.
Léo attended nursery school in a mainstream educational setting. He also participated in extracurricular activities, such as gymnastics and judo, in a mainstream environment. Thanks to his gentle personality and open nature, he quickly became the “class favorite” among his classmates.
Dès son plus jeune âge, Léo a présenté d'importants retards de développement. À l'âge de 3 mois, suite à de sérieuses inquiétudes concernant son développement, il a entamé un long et exigeant parcours médical. Léo a subi de nombreux examens et bilans médicaux avant qu'un diagnostic ne soit enfin posé. Cette période a été marquée par de nombreuses questions, mais aussi par un engagement sans faille de sa famille pour lui assurer le meilleur soutien possible.
Depuis, Léo est accompagné par une équipe de spécialistes très variés, notamment des kinésithérapeutes, des ergothérapeutes, des psychomotriciens, des orthophonistes et des orthoptistes, presque tous les jours de la semaine. Il a également bénéficié de programmes de thérapie intensive (sessions de 15 jours) en France et en Pologne, qui ont joué un rôle important dans ses progrès.
Léo a fréquenté l'école maternelle en milieu scolaire ordinaire. Il a également participé à des activités extrascolaires telles que la gymnastique et le judo. Grâce à sa personnalité douce et à sa nature ouverte, il est rapidement devenu le chouchou de ses camarades.
Development and Communication/Développement et communication
Léo primarily presents with developmental disorders and ataxia. Although he has made significant progress over the years, he is not yet able to walk. He currently uses a wheelchair and is able to move independently, either by propelling his manual wheelchair or by scooting on the floor when seated.
Léo understands what is said to him, but he has difficulties expressing himself verbally. To support communication, we use French Sign Language (LSF) as well as a PODD communication tool (an Augmentative and Alternative Communication system designed for people with complex communication needs), specially created by his speech therapist. This tool allows Léo to express his needs, emotions, and choices more effectively and supports his social interactions.
Léo présente principalement des troubles du développement et une ataxie. Bien qu'il ait fait des progrès significatifs au fil des ans, il ne marche pas encore. Il utilise actuellement un fauteuil roulant et se déplace de manière autonome, soit en le propulsant manuellement, soit en se déplaçant à quatre pattes au sol lorsqu'il est assis.
Léo comprend ce qu'on lui dit, mais il a des difficultés à s'exprimer verbalement. Pour faciliter sa communication, nous utilisons la langue des signes française (LSF), ainsi qu'un outil de communication PODD spécialement conçu par son orthophoniste. Ces outils permettent à Léo d'exprimer plus efficacement ses besoins, ses émotions et ses choix et favorisent ses interactions sociales. Profil médical
Léo n'a jamais présenté de crises d'épilepsie et ne semble pas souffrir de migraines. Ses examens médicaux, incluant ECG, radiographies et IRM, sont tous normaux, ce qui est rassurant quant à son état de santé général.
Medical Profile
Léo has never experienced epileptic seizures and does not appear to suffer from migraines. His medical examinations, including ECG, X-rays, and MRI scans, have all shown normal results, which is reassuring regarding his overall medical condition.

Education and Therapies/Scolarité et thérapies
Since May 2025, Léo has been attending an IMP (Medical-Educational Institute), located in the south of Lyon. He has been thriving in this environment for nearly one year.
Every day, Léo travels a little over an hour in the morning to reach the institute and makes the same journey back in the evening. Although these long trips are tiring for him, he is happy to go and feels fulfilled in this setting.
At the IMP, Léo benefits from a structured and multidisciplinary approach. He participates in adapted classroom activities, and his medical follow-up is fully managed within the Institute. This coordinated care allows Léo to progress at his own pace in a supportive and secure environment. He also receives regular support from:

Depuis mai 2025, Léo fréquente un IMP (Institut Médico-Éducatif) situé au sud de Lyon. Il s'épanouit dans cet environnement depuis près d'un an.
Chaque jour, Léo effectue un trajet d'un peu plus d'une heure le matin pour se rendre à l'institut, et le même trajet pour rentrer le soir. Bien que ces longs trajets soient fatigants, Léo est heureux d'y aller et s'y sent épanoui.
À l'IMP, Léo bénéficie d'une approche structurée et multidisciplinaire. Il reçoit un soutien régulier en :

Ergothérapie
Orthophonie
Il participe également à des activités adaptées en classe.
Son suivi médical est entièrement assuré au sein de l'institut.
Ces soins coordonnés permettent à Léo de progresser à son propre rythme dans un environnement sécurisant et bienveillant.
What Léo Loves/Ce que Léo aime
Léo enjoys going for walks and spending time outdoors. He particularly loves going to the swimming pool, where he feels relaxed and free in the water. These moments bring him joy and help support both his physical and emotional well-being.
Léo aime se promener et passer du temps dehors. Il adore particulièrement aller à la piscine, où il se sent détendu et libre dans l'eau. Ces moments lui apportent de la joie et contribuent à son bien-être physique et émotionnel.
Looking Ahead/Perspectives d'avenir
Léo’s journey is one of resilience, patience, and continuous effort. While his path is different, every step forward-no matter how small-is a true achievement. Léo’s story reminds us that progress takes many forms and that with love, perseverance, and the right support, each child can continue to grow and thrive in their unique way.
Le parcours de Léo est un exemple de résilience, de patience et d'efforts constants. Bien que son chemin soit différent, chaque pas en avant, aussi petit soit-il, est une véritable réussite.
